A Certificate forEnterprisehas been awarded to a 15 year old school girl from this village. Her name is Jennifer Douglas Abubabkar Sangweni, daughter of Nigadi, 34, and his wife Achino, 33. Jennifer showed an enterprising side to her when she first approached her teacher about setting up a school soccer team—something that the school could not previously support financially. Her teacher gave her the green light, after speaking to the head of the school.
We spoke to Jennifer to get her opinion of the plan. “I was really excited that my head teacher agreed. He even said he would paint a pitch for us and give us goals to use.”
She then set about making posters to advertise the idea. Students from the school were very quick to put their names down—both girls and boys—and pretty soon, Jennifer had enough names for more than a team. The team will play mixed sex for a while until they can gather enough for a two team squad with both a girl and a boy team.
Her mother said, “We have been so proud because she is only 15 and she has come up with this idea to bring the children of the community together. This soccer team means that we can play other schools in the district and have our own little soccer league. It helps all the children to get to know each other and we are very happy that she came up with such a good idea.”
Her father added “I have two daughters and I am pleased that one of them likes soccer. I watched the games on TV and it is great to see that the children in the village like to play soccer in a more controlled environment instead of just knocking the ball about. She has shown that she has strong qualities and we are very proud.”
